French Neo-Classical Carved Giltwood Mirror
A small French Neo-Classical carved Giltwood Mirror, the pierced crest with grape clusters and leaves flanked by rocaille C scrolls, below rosettes and floral sprays in the corners. H:29 3/8" W:17 3/8" In the visual arts and the decorative objects the European movement called "neoclassicism" began after ca 1765, as a reaction against both the surviving Baroque and Rococo styles, and as a desire to return to the perceived "purity" of the arts of Rome, or the perception of the ideal of Ancient Greek arts. Contrasting with the Baroque and the Rococo, Neo-classical paintings are devoid of pastel colors and haziness; instead, they have sharp colors with Chiaroscuro. In the case of Neo-classicism in France, a prime example is this particular Giltwood Mirror with influences of the classical.
