Antique Terracotta French Provincial Olive Jars from the St. Remy area, and the partially glazed ovoid body with a flared lip, and typical pitted surface the one in front is: H:21" Diameter of lip 13", $2,700.
The larger of the two also with a flared lip and ovoid body with typical pitted surface, partically glazed, H:24.5" Diameter of lip 15.5", $2,900. The classic Provençal and Mediterranean forms; the most common is the jarre à l'huile, or olive oil jar, traditionally in terra-cotta copiously coated with a thick drizzle of emerald-green or mustard-yellow glaze. These particular ones are lightly glazed and elegant in color. Terracotta is fairly coarse, porous clay that, when fired, assumes a colour ranging from dull ochre to red. Terra-cotta objects are usually left unglazed and are often of a utilitarian kind, because of their cheapness, versatility, and durability. Small terra-cotta figures from 3000 BC have been found in Greece and others throughout the Roman Empire from the 4th century BC. The use of terra-cotta virtually died out when the Roman Empire collapsed, but it was revived in Italy and Germany in the 15th century.
