Tiziano Vecellio's "Danae", 19th Century
19th Century Oil on Canvas: "Danae". 35" x 46.5". 16th century original in Museo Nazionale di Capo di Monte in Naples, Italy. In 1545 Titian accepted the invitation of the Pope's nephew, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and went to Rome. He carried with him the remarkable Danae (now in Naples), painted for Ottavio Farnese, which he had completed shortly before his departure. This work constitutes the clearest evidence of a stylistic change of direction in Titian's painting at this time.
It is clear that a work such as this Danae could never have been fully appreciated in the artistic climate of contemporary Rome. Indeed, Vasari recounts how the great Michelangelo went to pay his respects to Titian in his rooms and, having seen the Danae, praised its "colouring and style". On leaving the painter's house, however, Michelangelo could not resist adding that "it was a shame that in Venice they did not learn to draw well from the beginning and that those painters did not pursue their studies with more method."
Original is a 16th Century Oil on Canvas in Museo Nazionale de Capo di Monte in Naples, Italy. 35"H x 46.5"W. Our paintings are usually oil on canvas, unless otherwise noted. From time to time, we consign pieces of art in our Summerland, California gallery (10 minutes south of Santa Barbara). Most of our art is Italian or of Italian scenes. Sometimes we will buy paintings from English, American or French artists. Some of our oils are signed – not all of the signed artists are listed, although it is recommended to double check. All of our frames and paintings are in good to excellent condition, unless otherwise noted. Measurements are taken from the outside of the frame. We have for possible sale a custom original oil of the Arabian horse “Baskhemo” by the painter of the Queen’s horses, Julie A. Wear. Also for possible sale is an early 18th century diptych by Leonardo Coccorante.
