Italian Fruitwood Serpentine Front Commode, 18th c.
An Italian Fruitwood Serpentine Front Commode, 18th c., with three graduated long drawers retaining pierced batwing brasses, a scalloped skirt and cabriole legs, probably apple wood or pear wood in a dark finish. 34.5”H, 49”W, 23”D. A definition of serpentine: Named in allusion to its resemblance to a snake's skin, serpentine is usually grayish, white, or green but may be yellow (chrysotile) or green-blue (antigorite); the green colour is due to iron replacing magnesium. Scalloped: One of a series of curved projections forming an ornamental border.
